Company X decides to hold a Zoom meeting to gauge the staff's perceptions about the COVID-19 pandemic. One employee, Oliver, recently lost someone close to him to the COVID-19 virus and becomes increasingly agitated by some of his coworkers' views voiced in the meeting. Specifically, beliefs that the virus is not that serious and discussions of the lack of importance of wearing a mask. Exasperated by the comments, Oliver texts his coworker, Henry, telling him that he wants to make a comment condemning the opinions and the people making them in the meeting but that they are so hostile to other viewpoints, and he feels unable to speak up.
How could the discussion leader use emotional intelligence to determine if anyone has opposing viewpoints?
Choose a response:
The leader of the meeting should start the discussion with "conversation norms." These could include avoiding accusatory statements, giving everyone a chance to speak, and utilizing breakout groups to have smaller discussions. These guidelines would help to drive the conversation to be more inclusive to opposing views.
The discussion leader should ask the staff to submit their questions or comments prior to the meeting and review them. This would allow the leader to call on those with opposing viewpoints, giving them an opportunity to speak about their opinions. It would also give the leader ample preparation for discussions that may result in debate.
